Before buying a book or even investing your time in reading one, you want to make sure it’s good (at least I do!). A number of influencers I follow recommended Finlay Donovan is Killing It, so I was excited to read it. It wasn’t available from my local library, but I felt good enough to use an Audible credit on it because of how much people raved about it.
First, let’s start off with a quick summary of Finlay Donovan is Killing It. This novel centers around hot-mess mom Finlay who is behind on all of her bills, going through a custody battle with her ex-husband, and can’t get past her writer’s block to work on the novel she’s already been partly paid for. She finds herself entangled in a dangerous misunderstanding when someone mistakes her for a hitwoman after hearing her describe her latest novel to her agent at lunch. You can just imagine how chaotic Finlay’s life gets after this!
What I liked about it:
- This novel was funny, engaging, mysterious, and definitely kept my attention. I finished it quickly because I was interested enough to keep listening.
- I could relate to the chaos of parenting young kids! It was fun to read about the little things that happened at home with her kids. I wished there was more of this.
- Although Finlay makes some dumb choices, she’s a pretty relatable character. She was imperfectly human, which a lot of book characters just aren’t!
What I didn’t like about it:
- Some of it was just TOO unbelievable. Yes, I know you’re supposed to suspend your disbelief for a novel like this, but honestly for me, it was more of the everyday stuff that seemed too unbelievable, like the fact that Finlay’s nanny would do that dishes without even being asked and Finlay would leave the house without saying anything to anybody. Also, some of the choices Finlay made just seemed too unbelievable to me. Maybe this won’t bother other people like it did me, though.
- I chose this book because it was listed as “pretty clean,” but for me, it had a bit too much language.
Finlay Donovan is Killing It is unique in that it’s fairly lighthearted because of the main character’s voice and humor, but it’s also a page-turner and will keep you engaged the whole time. I’d recommend it if you’re looking for a good book to speed up on Audible or a book to keep you entertained!
